Doug Bey received his medical degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago. He then completed a rotating internship at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago followed by a three year residency at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, Kansas. He served as a captain and later major in the army medical corps first as chief of the inpatient psychiatric service of Ireland Hospital at Fort Knox, Kentucky and then as the division psychiatrist for the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. He returned to his home town of Normal, Illinois to start his private, multidisciplinary practice of psychiatry.

Dr. Bey published a number of professional articles based on his combat experiences in Vietnam. Later he wrote Wizard 6, a memoir of his year as the psychiatrist for the Big Red One in Vietnam.

Deborah Bey trained at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis and was the head nurse on a hospital chemical dependency unit for a number of years. She later joined Dr. Bey in his psychiatric group practice and counseled adult children of alcoholics on an individual and group basis. Together Deb and Doug have over seventy years of clinical experience working directly with these patients. They utilized this extensive experience to collaborate in writing their book, Loving an Adult Child of an Alcoholic.

Both Deborah and Dr. Bey have learned from each other through their relationship and marriage. Doug is now semi-retired but continues a limited private practice in Normal, Illinois. He jokingly refers to himself now as a "type B psychiatrist, and a type A writer."
